I have a tooth infection. I know I do. I knew it was developing, but tried to pretend it wasn’t . Yeah, I know. Stupid plan. But, when you’re as afraid of the dentist as I am, you’d understand. I’ve been taking oxycodone to deal with the pain. Could I take that when I go to the emergency dentist? It might help with the pain the dentist causes.

Lauren P. – Minnesota

Lauren,

I’m sorry for the pain you’re in. I’m sure you already know this, but the longer you wait to get treatment, the more difficult the treatment. However, there’s nothing to be done about that now. If you have a tooth infection, you need to see an emergency dentist. It’s important you get treatment quickly, because infections spread. Tooth infections left untreated can become life threatening.

While the oxycodone is likely taking the edge off your pain, it won’t be a good idea for your dental appointment. It could interfere with what your dentist is trying to do.

I understand you’ve got significant dental fear, so before you panic, here me out. There is a better option for you. I’d look for an emergency dentist that also does oral conscious sedation. It’s a pill you’ll take that will completely relax you for your appointment. It will be pain free.  You’ll be conscious and able to react, but will be totally relaxed. Many patients don’t even remember the appointment.
